Mathias Klotz
Mathias Klotz Studio, Santiago
Based in Santiago, Mathias Klotz is one of the most prolific and exciting young architects working in South America today. Born in the costal Chilean town of Viña del Mar in 1965, Mathias has forged a career as both an architect and educator.
Mathias has achieved international recognition for his residential, commercial and public architecture – designing houses, hotels, conference centres and schools which are spacious, precise and elegant, utilising local materials and technology. Klotz means ‘block’ in German, apt given his stylistic approach to architecture. His work encompasses a concern for the environment, local history and culture and a strong sense of place.
Mathias himself states:
‘I am interested in belonging to a place… That is what my work is about…
I have no idea if I have found a place, but I think there are some projects that do have one.
The Reutter House has one by climbing up the trees. The Las Niñas Winery has one by illuminating the industrial space with natural light. The Mulchnick House has one by constructing an inhabitable terrace. The Ponce House has one on the River Plate.’
Some of Mathias's significant projects include:
- The Hunter Douglas Showroom in Santiago, Chile (2009)
- Escuela de Vela Portals in Mallorca, Spain (2009)
- Casa Massai in Cachagua, Chile (2009)
- Casa Richardson in Santa Mónica, Uruguay (2008)
- Casa Oks in José Ignacio, Uruguay (2007)
- Casa Raul in Aculeo, Chile (2007)
- Casa Techos in Patagonia, Argentina (2006)
- Casa La Roca in José Ignacio, Uruguay (2006)
- Casa Santa Monica in Santa Monica, Uruguay (2006)
- The Faculty of Medicine, University of Diego Portales in Santiago, Chile (2004)
- Hotel F-30 in Zapallar, Chile (2001)
- Casa Viejo in Santiago, Chile (2001)
Since 2003 Mathias has held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Art and Design at the University of Diego Portales in Santiago. He has also been a studio professor at the Catholic University in Chile – the institution where he gained his architecture degree in 1991, aged 26. His projects have been entered into major competitions across South America and Europe, and been awarded numerous architectural prizes. He has held regular exhibitions of his work in Chile, Japan, Spain, the USA and Italy.
In this lecture, the first in the Dean’s Lecture Series for 2010, Mathias will present a visual survey of his recent works and discuss his architectural practice and vision.
To coincide with the lecture, an exhibition of selected works by Mathias Klotz will be on display in the Wunderlich Gallery, 8-19 March.
