27 February - 17 March, 2012
EXHIBITION:
A New Building for the University of Melbourne
Wunderlich Gallery, Ground Floor, Architecture Building
Gallery Open: Monday to Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm
The Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning is working towards creating a world-leading centre of education and research focused on the built environment.
Following an international design competition in 2009, which attracted 133 submissions from 15 countries, we appointed the architectural team of John Wardle Architects (Melbourne) and NADAAA (Boston) to work with us to deliver our vision for a living, pedagogical building that is an exemplar of sustainable design and transformative teaching.
With the conclusion of the design development phase, we have reached an exciting moment in our new building project to create a landmark new building for the University of Melbourne.
The exhibition will showcase the design schemes for our future building and reveal the collaborative design processes and research undertaken between John Wardle Architects and NADAAA. Organized around the themes of the design competition, the exhibition will reveal the architects responses to four key concepts: built pedagogy; the academic environment; the design studio; the living building.
Due for completion in 2015, our future building will revitalize the centre of the campus and will transform the way our Faculty delivers education and research in the built environment disciplines. Instrumental in the design are the concepts of a living and pedagogical building that will facilitate interdisciplinary studio-based learning. With its series of soaring atrium spaces, flexible design studios, open workspaces and roof-top garden, it will be a new kind of academic space that will encourage people to work collaboratively and imaginations to soar. The transparency of the building invites people to observe and participate in the life of the Faculty.
The building will also present a unique and fascinating learning tool for staff, students and researchers, both during the construction phase and once it is occupied.
The new building project is not just about creating a great architectural object to house the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, but will demonstrate that good design can be a focal point for the University of Melbourne.
You can view the new building design exhibition in the Wunderlich Gallery (Architecture Building) from 27 February to 17 March, 2012.
