ABP Alumni Retrospective Series: kennedy nolan_a view

5-30 September
EXHIBITION

Established in 1999, Kennedy Nolan Architects has developed a reputation as a design focused practice with a distinctive approach to built form and a strong connection to site. Their work benefits from a multi-discipline approach to architecture. Graphics and sculpture inform and are incorporated into their work and the practice constantly explores the possibilities for colour and materials to generate architectural elements.
Kennedy Nolan’s exhibition in the Wunderlich Gallery features an expansive mural of black and white photographs of their built projects, a free-standing wall covered in luminous fabric and a low plinth-like wall displaying scale models of architectural walls.  The installation reflects Kennedy Nolan's investigation into the art of the wall and their interests in the making of architecture: materiality, tactility, porosity, luminosity and visuality.

“An exhibition is a way to reflect on work, but also an opportunity to interrogate both the conscious and un‐conscious motivations, tendencies and practices that inform this work. Design at kennedy nolan is generated by the optimistic precepts of modernism ‐ rational, utilitarian, empowered by technology ‐ and a positive view that the design and arrangement of spaces can support and reinforce relationships, can add piquancy and zest to life. Less tangibly, the practice is also compelled to distil the impalpable – to draw on the numinous reaches of memory, the evocative power of recognizing form, colour, texture and light, the resonance of shared memories, of history and landscapes.” - kennedy nolan

ABP Alumni Retrospective Series: An Exhibition by ARM Architecture - God Knows

6 June - 1 July
EXHIBITION

God Knows is an exhibition by ARM Architecture for the ABP Alumni Retrospective Series. The series celebrates the work of ABP alumni and aims to highlight the extraordinary range and contribution they make to our design culture and built environment. ARM Architecture's Stephen Ashton and Howard Raggatt are alumni of the University of Melbourne and in 1988 they co-founded ARM Architecture with Ian McDougall. ARM has since become one of Australia's leading architecture practices. This intriguing exhibition is a conceptual representation of selected ARM works (both built and unrealised), the people and personalities behind the ARM Studio and the public and internal perceptions of ARM.

PHOOEY Architects: Upcycling

This installation re-presents past works produced by PHOOEY Architects and develops a useful dialogue which is likely to influence the processes for their future projects.

The second exhibition in our ABP Alumni Retrospective Series for 2010 profiles the practice and vision of one of our most exciting graduate architects - Peter Ho. Established in 2004 with Emma Young, PHOOEY Architects aims to create zero waste and is entertained by the sobriety of global warming. The practice has received international awards and publication worldwide for their Children’s Activity Centre at Skinners Playground. This exhibition also includes a sporting pavilion that tries to start a Mexican wave; a high-rise residential tower constructed from recycled shipping containers; affordable houses; a hair salon growing a surreal hair chandelier; four rivers flowing through a primary school; and a prototype bicycle shed due to be rolled out at train stations across Victoria.

Public Works

26 October - 13 November 2009
Exhibition of work from Peter Elliott Architecture + Urban Design

Wunderlich Gallery

Public Works by Peter Elliott Architecture + Urban Design is the inaugural event of the ABP Alumni Retrospective Series.

The idea for this "public works" exhibition derives from a long standing interest and investigation into the changing nature of cities, public space and public architecture.

The practice has worked almost exclusively on public commissions for over 30 years within inner Melbourne. This is a small local world, but one which has been progressively informed by forensic observation, the work of other seminal designers, teaching, travelling, books, conversation and ultimately the work itself.

We see architecture, landscape & urban design as sharing a common endeavour. We admire those practitioners who work across all design boundaries and understand and value the place they work in. Our involvement in urban public architecture has happened almost by accident as a body of projects and way of working has developed over time - each commission informing the next.

We like cities and the constant change they undergo. We also like the idea that cities are constructed by many generations and that our contribution has to negotiate its place among many others.

The exhibition sampling includes some urban infrastructure projects which construct new public spaces like road architecture, or urban architecture projects which locate new buildings or additions within the established fabric of the city.
