The New Building is featured in The Weekly Review’s profile of the building boom at Melbourne’s universities on Wednesday 18 April. Tom Kvan comments on the project so far and what it means for the University.

Carolyn Whitzman speaks to Lisa Pryor for the Saturday Ag, the Sydney Morning Herald and Daily Life about her research, Vertical Living Kids, on Saturday 14 April.

Brendan Gleeson’s Professorial Lecture, which takes place on Monday 30 April has been profiled in Architecture Australia, Architecture and Design and Australian Design Review.

MSD students Jaxsun Plumley and Anastasia Sklavakis were commended for their work ‘Colourplay’ in the 2012 Dulux Colour Awards, featured in Australian Design Review on Thursday 29 March.

Professor Kim Dovey comments on windowless developments in the Melbourne Weekly on Wednesday 28 March. The article suggests a striking new trend for apartments with ‘in-board’ bedrooms.

Dr David Nichols spoke to The Grapevine on 3RRR FM Melbourne on Monday 26 March about the roles of local government and developers in urban planning.

Alumnus Michael Barraclough has been awarded the Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship in architecture. Described as ‘one of Australia's most promising young architects’, Michael will use his scholarship to fund post-graduate study in London at the influential Architectural Association, Design Research Laboratory (AADRL). Dr Alan March commented on mixed-use development in the Hume Leader on 21 Wednesday March.

Olivia Baenziger, one of the winners in the high school student category of the Future Proofing Schools Design Ideas competition, was profiled in The Age on Tuesday 20 March.

Dr David O’Brien has been recognised with a commendation in the 2012 Neville Quarry Architectural Education Prize for his work in the Bower Studios and his dedication to research.  The Prize acknowledges an outstanding contribution in architectural education in one or more areas of: teaching, scholarship, research, leadership and community engagement.

Professor Kim Dovey’s research into graffiti and how it contributes to urban character was profiled in The Herald Sun on 20 Tuesday March.

Associate Professor Carolyn Whitzman comments on the impact urban planning can have on public health in The Age, on 15 March.  Carolyn was also profiled in Architecture & Design in March.

Dr Kate Shaw was interviewed on 3CR’s ‘City Limits’ about inner city planning on 14 March.

The first Dean’s Lecture for 2012 – Robert Buckley on urbanisation – was mentioned by Ray Edgar in his ‘shape’ column in The Age, 9 March; it was featured in The Melbourne Leader on 12 March; and was profiled in Architecture & Design.  Robert was also interviewed about urbanisation on ‘Connect Asia’, ABC Radio Australia on 14 March.

The Skins Studio ceiling installation, which currently adorns our Concourse, is featured in an article profiling emerging design talent in Australia, in the current edition of Artichoke (Issue 38).

Coverage of the new building exhibition and project continued in March with a feature in the ‘Voice’, The Age on 12 March; in a ‘Visions’ video podcast; and in the design blog Panfilocastaldi.

Professor Richard Tomlinson and Dr Jennie Day wrote a piece in The Age on Tuesday 6 March, examining the impact of major events in Victoria.

Professor Kim Dovey comments on the original 1989 plan for the Docklands precinct in the article Can Docklands be put back together again? in The Saturday Age, page 18, on 3 March.

The new building design exhibition in the Wunderlich Gallery was profiled in Green,  Architecture & Design, Architectureau, MUSSE and Australian Design Review throughout late February and March.

The exhibition showcasing our new building design by John Wardle Architects and NADAAA was profiled by Ray Edgar in the ‘Shape’ section of The Age on Friday 24 February and on The Architects program on 3RRR on Tuesday 28 February.

Associate Professor Clare Newton and Lena Gan published a piece in the Jan/Feb edition of Architecture Australia about the recent national major investment in school buildings known as ‘Building the Education Revolution’.

Toby Horrocks, ABP tutor and furniture designer, writes about the sustainability trend in architecture in the Jan/Feb 2012 edition of Architecture Australia.

Two ABP publications are now online: MAP 1 – Investigative Design, edited by  Dr Stanislav Roudavski, and Performative Architecture Studio, a sample book produced by Dr Stanislav Roudavski, Roger Alsop, Gwyllim Jahn and Kirilly Barnett about the Masters-level design subject exploring the concepts and techniques of digital architectural design.

The exhibition showcasing our new building design, opening to the public on 27 February, was profiled in the design media including in Architecture & Design, Architectureau and Australian Design Review.  You can also read the Media Release about the exhibition online.

Tullia Jack’s recent research into alternative laundering practices to make clothing more sustainable is profiled in the February edition of The Melbourne Review, page 12.  Tullia is a recent MSD graduate.

An extensive review of the Encyclopedia of Australian Architecture, edited by Chair of Architecture, Philip Goad and Associate Professor, Julie Willis, was profiled in The Australian on Saturday 11th February.

The Encyclopedia of Australian Architecture, co-edited by Professor Philip Goad and Professor Julie Willis, is profiled in the February edition of 'Voice' (Volume 8, No 2) in The Age on Monday 13 February.

The Encyclopedia of Australian Architecture was also reviewed by Richard Conrad in The Hobart Mercury, on Saturday 4 February, who described it as ‘magnificent.’

The MSD Incubator 'Future Proofing Schools' design competition was profiled in Architecture & Designon Friday 10 February.

Dr Dominique Hes, lead author of the University of Melbourne study into ‘white roofs’ to reduce building heat, participated in the City of Melbourne launch of research findings on 24 January.  The research has been profiled extensively in the media this month including in: Campus Daily, The West Australian, ninemsn, Herald Sun, The Age, Illawarra Mercury, The Melbourne Leader, The Moonee Valley Weekly and The Maribyrnong Weekly.

Dr Chris Heywood and Eckhart Hertzsch were awarded ‘Best Paper in Property Management’ at the recent Pacific Rim Real Estate Society conference in Adelaide for their paper ‘Climatic influence on life-cycle investing for sustainable refurbishments in Australia’.

On 30 January the Melbourne Leader details Dr. Dominique Hes' research into sustainable planning, detailing the economic and financial benefits of using reflective white paint on building rooftops.

The Encyclopedia of Australian Architecture, co-edited by Associate Professor Julie Willis and Professor Philip Goad, is profiled in the Townsville Bulletin on 28 January.

Barrie Shelton, Associate Professor of Urban Design, discusses a new book by Australian architects and planners detailing the history of Hong Kong's approach to building on Radio National, Canberra's Saturday Extra on Saturday 28 January.

Dr. Dominique Hes, Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Architecture speaks to Luke Grant on Melbourne Talk Radio on Tuesday 24 January, to discuss how to keep buildings cool during the hot summer days. Dr. Hes discusses how painting roofs white can help to assess whether or not they retain or dispel heat.

Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Architecture, Dominique Hess discusses low cost solutions for making our buildings more sustainable in MX (Melbourne) on Tuesday 24 January.

The Encyclopedia of Australian Architecture, co-edited by Associate Professor Julie Willis and Professor Philip Goad, was included in the Herald Sun's Great Reads on Saturday 21 January.


Dr. Ong Boon Lay discusses flooding in cities and solutions for managing heavy rainfall in urban settings in The Straits Times on Wednesday 11th January 2012.

Daniel Coomber is profiled in The Warnambool Standard, on Wednesday 4th January, following his company, NOW Architects, success in the Melbourne School of Design Incubator Future Proofing Schools Competition.
