Professor William J (Bill) Mitchell
The University community is greatly saddened by the news of the passing of Professor William (Bill) Mitchell on 11 June 2010, aged 65 years.
Professor Mitchell, a defining figure in the emergence of computer aided design, was one of the first urban theorists to explore the potential of the digital world to the built environment. A 1967 graduate of the Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Melbourne, he went on to hold professorial positions in the University of California, Harvard and MIT. His many contributions have been recognised by a Fellowship in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and through the award of six honorary doctorates, including one from his alma mater.
A memorial service was held to honour his life and work on Thursday 19 August at 11.30am in the Woodward Conference Centre, University Square, Carlton.
